When you think of Ramadan, what is the first thing that springs to mind? The Quran, Suhoor and iftar meals, Sadaqa (charity), Tarawaeh (night prayers), Itikaf (masjid isolation), or the night of decree? Ramadan was different last year and is still different this year. The pandemic has changed several aspects relating to Ramadan. The mini jamaat (prayer gathering) at home, led by the family head or our boys who have been able to memorize portions of the Quran, has taken the place of the long tarawaeh (night prayers) in the masjid. Our iftar tables were largely lot simpler and easier to prepare as we didn't have any visitors to entertain. Zakat was given to those in need without them having to travel. Their account received the transfer. We suffered harm as well.

We hoped that Masjid al-haram would once more be crowded with people doing the umrah during Ramadan! This year, some nations have loosened limitations. However, our approach to Ramadan has evolved.
By fasting, we learn to appreciate and be grateful for what we have.
It exhorts us to give up things that make Allah unhappy.
It gives us the ability to restrain our desires.
It increases our empathy for the underprivileged.
Ramadan's core
I only touched on a few of passages. Pay close attention to the verses about Taqwa throughout this Ramadan. Every Ramadan, we should aim to acquire Taqwa. We have the opportunity to recharge ourselves with taqwa this month. This ought to help us live our lives according to Allah's will. May we not live mindlessly, disobeying Allah's commands. May we put aside our disagreements and encourage one another to do good and to refrain from evil. May we live our lives as if we were on a thorny path (Be careful). May TAQWA be a blessing to us.
