What are Muslims' beliefs regarding marriage ?

1. Sacred Covenant: Islamic society views marriage as a holy covenant and a cornerstone of society. The significance of marriage is highlighted by the Quran's reference to it as a "firm covenant" (Quran 4:21).

2. Purpose of Marriage: In Islam, the main goals of marriage are to establish a stable and peaceful home life and to fulfill half of one's religious obligations. Muslims consider marriage to be a legitimate means of meeting one's emotional, spiritual, and bodily needs.

3. Consent: One of the most important prerequisites for a legal Islamic marriage is the consent of both parties. Forced weddings are fiercely forbidden; both the bride and groom must voluntarily consent to the union.

4. Mahr (Dower): As part of the marriage contract, the groom is required to give the bride a present or a certain amount of money. This is called Mahr, and it gives the wife a legal claim to money. 

5. Mutual Respect and Kindness: Spouses are commanded by the Quran to treat one another fairly and with kindness. There is reciprocal respect, sympathy, and support in the partnership. It is declared of the Prophet Muhammad, "The best among you are those who are best to their wives."

6. Responsibilities and Rights: Islam specifies duties and rights that apply to both spouses. Wives have the right to be treated with love and respect, while husbands are in charge of supporting the family financially and keeping everything in order.

7. Monogamy and Polygyny: Although Islam allows a man to have up to four wives under specific circumstances, it places a strong emphasis on treating each wife fairly and justly. In general, monogamy is desired, while polygyny is permitted under rigorous guidelines that include treating each woman fairly.

8. Family Values: Families are highly valued in Islam, and having children is seen as a blessing. It is the parents' responsibility to raise and educate their children. 

9. Role of Religion:In Islamic marriages, it is common for shared religious values and beliefs to be significant. Strong religious convictions are thought to have a part in a married couple's success.

10. Divorce: Islam allows for divorce, however it is only done as a last resort. There are regulations governing the divorce procedure, called Talaq, and attempts at reconciliation are welcomed.
